shure Microphone Mac What are the first things I will need to start a home studio other than computer and software?
I'm about to start going to school for music production and I was wondering what the first, most essential pieces of equipment I will need for professional quality recordings would be? I am getting my mac computer soon with protools and I have cinema-grade power amplifiers and a Shure SM58 microphone for vocals. I just wanted to know what would be the most important parts i should get on a sort of low budget to get things started. Thank you in advance everyone =)
The first most important thing is software. Decide what DAW you're going to use. If you've decided on Pro Tools then you need to decide on hardware. Will you go M-Powered or LE? How many channels of I/O will you need? These are all things you should consider before making a purchase. Many people like a mixer or control surface also. After that I would start looking into microphones. Look for multipurpose mics if your just starting off. SM57s are a popular and cheap solution for guitars/drums. If you're looking at doing vocals, it'd be good to invest in a pop screen. My buddy and I made an improvised pop screen out of some wire with pantyhose wrapped over it though, so if your budget is tight that's an alternate solution. Lastly, plugins are a great way to enhance your sound. Unfortunately they can be rather pricey but they can make all the difference in a mix.
