Noise Cancelling Headsets - What to Look for When Getting a Noise Canceling Headset

If you're looking to get a really good pair of noise cancelling headphones, then this is the article you need to read. We will start by comparing in-ear earphones to over-the-ear headphones, followed by a look at the main features to keep an eye out for. We will then finish with a look at the main brands and their product ranges.

In-Ear vs Over-the-Head Headsets

Obviously the main benefit to choosing the ear bud style of headphone is that they are small and easy to carry around with you. This makes them a great choice for people who are on the move a lot. However, the down-side to these types of headphones is that their sound quality is not quite as good as over-the-head style headphones, particularly in the bass.

Over-the-ear headphones are bigger and clunkier than earbuds, making them less convenient for travelling. However, many top models of headphones are foldable, so this partly eliminates this problem; and with the superior sound quality available on this style of headphone, it is the clear winner when it comes to a quality listening experience.

Features to Look for in Noise Cancelling Headphones

  • Noise Reduction: check the noise reduction capability of the headphones, if you want the true noise-cancelling experience. This is something that very much varies from product to product, so take a look at what previous customers have to say.
  • Comfort: your headphones should be comfortable to wear, so check what previous customers have to say about this.
  • Weight & Foldability: if you're planning to use your headphones for travelling, for example on air plane flights, then you will want them to be nice and light. You will also want them to be easily foldable.
  • Sound Quality: your new headphones should just be all about cutting out unwanted external noise. You also want them to be good at reproducing high quality sound.
  • Cord Length: how far away from the sound source are you likely to want to be? a short cord is fine if you're just travelling on a train listening to your MP3 player, but some situations (such as lying on your bed far away from your computer or TV) then a longer cord is needed.

The Number 1 Noise Canceling Headset Brands & Their Products

  • Sennheiser: $15-$1,400. Undoubtedly the best make of noise canceling headphones. A terribly decent selection of headphones spread across an especially large price range.
  • Sony: $14-$240. A decent range of headsets at reasonable prices.
  • Bose: $70-$300. A good choice of noise cancelling headphones.
  • Philips: $53-$195. A decent variety of headsets at reasonable prices.
  • JVC: $16-$150. A decent variety of headsets at reasonable prices.
  • Audio Technica: $60-$220. A range of extremely reasonably priced headsets.

Quality headphones ideal for a holiday?

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD555's but don't want to take them on holiday because of their shear size and the fact that they leak so much noise.

Ideally I'd like a pair of headphones (not in ear!) that are small and comfortable to wear over long periods of time, that don't leak (too much) sound and are fairly robust. A pair of Sennheiser PX100's would be ideal if only they didn't leak so much sound!

Any ideas?

Try Sennheiser PXC300, with noise reduction system, they fold up neatly and bring their own carry case.

Any recommendations for some good headphones?

Looking for a pair of headphones that meet these criteria: under 60.00, comfortable, not too open because don't want sound to leak in and out, and covers the ear. These will be used for an ipod and a cd player mainly. Researched the Koss Portapro and Sennheiser PX100. Thoughts on the two or others would be great.

Somy are always top rate. Unfortunatley with $60 limit these are abut the only 3 brands you can get.

Sennheiser PXC 250 II

Sennheiser brings the PXC 250-II and thus the successor to the PXC 250 on the market. Like its predecessor, the headset uses active noise cancellation, which was further optimized and designed to reduce ambient noise even more effectively.

The technique is called "NoiseGard" and is used in aviation for some time. Into the headphone shells you have installed small microphones that pick up the sound of the environment. In parallel, the Sennheiser PXC 250-II produced a counter-sound. This "anti-sound" is to compensate for ambient noise. The noise suppression to enable a control panel that has been integrated into the cable. On the control unit can regulate the volume. Moreover, this court finds the AAA battery, it brings with active noise cancellation according to the manufacturer for a term of up to 50 hours. The Sennheiser PXC 250 are two batteries were needed.

If the battery is empty, then can continue to use the Sennheiser quite normal - just without noise suppression. The ear cups sit on the ear and to a frequency range of ten Hertz to 21000 cover, the sensitivity is 112 decibels. The cable has a length of 1.5 meters and is connected Mutually, the 3.5 mm jack is for connection to the players straight. The Sennheiser PXC 250-II folds up and comes with a carrying case and airplane adapter.

How effective "NoiseGard" really works, will show the first test. The headphones will be available this month in the trade, the price, the manufacturer makes no details.

Help me pick a studio microphone, please?!?

So I am pretty much at a crossroads when it comes to picking great studio microphones. I am on a $700 budget and all I want is a pre-amp/audio interface, a microphone, and a cable. I'm not interested in a mixer right now. I have done my research and I have narrowed it down to the Rode NT1-A, Rode NT2-A, AKG Perception 420, and the Audio Technica AT2020. What do you think I should get? AND any suggestions for a good audio interface/pre-amp? Thanks so much in advance

Any of those mics will work great - If I had to pick, maybe the Rode NT-2A. For an interface:
